How do you read the ingredient labels on your food and homecare products?
Why is this important? How is this skill related to English?

Reading scientific jargon on food and homecare products will help you determine what products you and your family feel safe buying. Learning how to read the ingredients is important because it can help you to know what food is actually FOOD.

Does food matter if we stay fit?
Can't I eat McDonalds if I go to the gym?
How do we trust the fitness influencers on social media? Who is actually certified to teach this?

Learning how to decern data is part of an English class. Learning how to read the fine print will help you
be a smart customer for life.

So now what?
Our final project will be learning how to write a professional email to companies (of products you currently own) and asking them to make the product healthier. After all, you are already a customer spending money on this product, and they should listen to your demands.

This unit of study will teach you how to voice your opinion for the health and wellness of you and your family using the following writing skills: hook, introduction, thesis, counterclaim, evidence, and conclusion.
*Professional Email Writing skills: What is written in the subject line? CC? BCC? in an email

Cross-curricular learning: budgeting the cost of weekly groceries and monthly hygiene products.

Answer the following questions:
1)What is the total spent?
2) How much did she save?
3) What was the most expensive item?
4) What was the least expensive item?

5) If Timmons was purchasing groceries for a family

of five people this bill would be double or triple in length

depending on the age of the children etc.
What is the triple amount of this bill?

6)Calculate this total using the prices on the receipt
Grapes 3 bundles (Timmons purchased one bundle)
Potato 12 (Timmons purchased one)
Alfredo Style Mac 7 (Timmons purchased one)
Mills Spice Cake 12 (Timmons purchased one)
Baby Arrugala 3 (Timmons 1)
Cage Free Eggs 4 (Timmons 1)
Ground Turkey 5 (Timmons 2)
Avacado 6 (Timmons 1)
Red Curry Soup 12 (Timmons 1)
Spray Avacado Oil 2 (Timmons 1)
Classic Pizza Sause Tomato Sause 4 (Timmons 1)

7)What is the total?
8)What meals could you make from this list ...breakfast? lunch? dinner?
9)How many meals could you try to make from this list?
10)How long would this list feed a family of five?

Sample Letters to Companies

You'll notice the sentence frames

that the students could pull from my sample letter. This was helpful for ELD

support.

You'll also notice some sentence structure that is not proper English

but it is the student voice. That is more important culturally to embrace

rather than sticking to the Queen's

English.

To Whom It May Concern:

I have been purchasing Maruchan ramen packs for eight years. I started eating them when I was five years old. (I am now 13.) I eat them with my family three times a month. My dad and I really like this brand. The average price for Maruchan packs is $11.49 per box. This means we spent at least $400 per year, towards your company’s profit and growth. As a customer, I’d like to talk to you about how to remove some of your ingredients from the ramen that cause potential health risks to my family, me, and as well as the other customers of Maruchan.

When I scanned the box using the Yuka app, they scored a 0/100! I had already known that ramen packs aren’t necessarily healthy for me, but for it to be so bad as to score a 0?!  As I researched further into the ingredients listed on the box, I realized that there are quite a few ingredients endangering my health. The two ingredients that are most hazardous are monosodium and silicon dioxide. If monosodium glutamate is consumed, it can cause nausea, migraines, skin flushing, hot flashes, obesity, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases. Neurodegenerative diseases happen when nerve cells in the brain lose function over time and ultimately lead to death. As for silicon dioxide, it can damage the kidney tissue and weaken your liver function. These are harmful ingredients that will end up in death.

If I keep eating this product with glutamate and silicon then I could get cancer or diabetes. I wouldn’t be able to go to school because I’d need to be treated at the hospital. Some people have these issues/diseases in life and actually struggle battling cancer, diabetes, etc. Their own families have to watch them suffer and sometimes they can’t fight it off. People in real life are losing their friends, siblings, and all sorts of relatives. Yet, you can’t remove just two ingredients from your brand? I hope you wouldn’t want your customers to develop these diseases or end up in the hospital due to eating your products.

On top of that, I found that Lotus Foods’ Rice Ramen Noodles do not consist of silicon or monosodium in their ramen packages. I could simply just stop eating your noodles, give my money to them, and even start telling my family and friends that Lotus’ brand is better. The 170 seventh-grade students at our school have taught sixth-graders and some eighth-graders how to read ingredients and how to point out harmful chemicals. There are 450 students that know about the ingredients added in your products. I am not alone, I’m sure that these 450 students would all agree with me.

But I’d still recommend that you remove these ingredients from your ramen before people get upset and start suing. If people realize that they are eating these harmful ingredients, your brand could be canceled, you’d lose business, and your company would stop making money out of people. If that’s what you want for your company’s future then you can be my guest.

I look forward to hearing back from you. I appreciate the time you’ve taken to read this letter from a long-time customer. Together we can change the world and have healthier lives. We can live in pride for selling food that won’t poison our bodies. Let’s help corporate America become noble.

Sincerely,

Khailynn V.

To Whom it May Concern:

Hello, I am a newbie customer of your products! I have been using the Glow Recipe Niacinamide Dew Drops for about three months now, mostly once every week. So far, even though I’ve been using it for a short amount of time, I’ve been really interested in this product! I think you know this, but the average price is about $15-25 per bottle, and currently, I’ve bought two mini containers. So if you do the math, this means that I’ve spent AT LEAST $30-50 towards your company. As a customer, I would love to let you guys know that you’re doing a great job on creating formulas for your product!

When I scanned Glow Recipe’s Niacinamide Dew Drops on Yuka, an app where you scan a product and it shows customers if it is healthy, you guys scored a 79/100!! Which is an excellent score. I was honestly so relieved that you guys scored amazing results! I first heard of your guy’s product on a YouTube video talking about the top ten best serums. As an outcome, I am so glad that I found your product and I will definitely continue to purchase your products as long as you keep your ingredients clean and you care about your customers.

You set yourself apart from the competition by being transparent about skincare ingredients and educating your customers about them. As a result, I greatly appreciate your efforts to keep your customers well-informed about the products they're using, enabling us to make informed choices about our skincare routines! In addition, you deserve great credit for your dedication to customer satisfaction and well-being, which is something that other brands don't care too much about.

I also wanted to let you guys know that I am not just one voice and customer! I’m actually a seventh grader who attends Gavilan View Middle School, and I have taught my seventh-grade English class, as well as some sixth graders too, about your products. They now know about your product and have shared it with the people that they know, which could result in many more customers for you guys! I trust that even if there is more demand for your products since you guys are getting more well-known on social media, you won’t change your ingredients for cheaper substitutes just to catch up with the pressure.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter! I’m super satisfied with your product and I will definitely be purchasing your guys' products continuously. I believe that with enough effort you will be able to dominate the market and make an impact on what ingredients end up in our products. If you’d like to send me free samples, I'd be thrilled!

Again, I appreciate you guys care and I can’t wait to see what else you have in store!

Sincerely,

Jewel C.

To Whom It May Concern:

I got the Lancome Lash - Idole Mascara for Christmas. I wear that mascara six times a week. The average price for this mascara is $24 per container. As a customer, I’d like to talk to you about how to get rid of ingredients from your mascara that cause health risks to me and all your customers.

When I scanned your mascara using the Yuka app, they scored a 31/100. Although your mascara gives my lashes a good lift, I was shocked to see how dangerous your ingredients are. I realized that most of your ingredients cause eye and skin irritation. Paraffin, according to the European Union, is mildly toxic to humans and causes problems like skin drying and eye irritation. Phenoxyethanol can have side effects of skin, lung, and liver irritation, and kidney and nerve damage. This ingredient is also suspected to be endocrine-disrupting.

I’m 13 and what would happen if I keep using your product with harmful ingredients? I could get lung and liver problems or kidney and nerve damage. My family would have to watch me suffer. A lot of people have lost loved ones due to these illnesses. Do you really want your customers to be worried about their future while using your product?

150 seventh-grade students have been researching harmful ingredients and some people have also learned about paraffin and phenoxyethanol. I’ve taught sixth graders about this mascara and they realized what these ingredients could cost them later in life, making fewer people not want to buy your product.

Upon further research, Extreme Volume Mascara has all risk-free ingredients. I could simply put my money in their direction instead. But I also want your company to take out paraffin and phenoxyethanol. Why? Because I believe that all customers want to be healthy and would not like to have health risks later in life.

I look forward to hearing back from you. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter from a concerned customer. Let’s help customers be happy to have a mascara that doesn’t cause them health risks later in life and keeps their lashes looking good at the same time.

Sincerely,

To Whom It May Concern:

I have been purchasing Strawberry Helados Mexicanos with my family for five years. I eat them mostly on Fridays. The average price for a box of six ice creams is $4.87. This means I have spent at least $1,200 toward your company. As a customer, I would like to talk to you about how to eliminate some ingredients that can cause serious health risks to me, and my family.

When I scanned Strawberry Helados Mexicanos on the Yuka app, they scored 57/100!!! I was shocked because I mostly eat these every week and I have eaten them with my family. I thought this was healthy because it has low calories. As I researched more I figured out it has too much sugar which can be hazardous to me. According to ANSES: French Agency for Food Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety, this has too much sugar, which is two times more sugar than needed. Too much sugar can increase the risk of diabetes and weight gain.

My mom Silvia has diabetes and she can’t eat candy or much sugar. She always has to check her blood pressure. She is also overweight because of eating too much sugar. She always has to go to the doctor because of her diabetes. I wouldn’t want anybody to have diabetes. I'm sure you would not want this to happen to your family, friends, and customers either.

Upon further research, I have found out that Outshine ice cream bars are better and do not have as much sugar. I could simply move my money in their direction, which I did recently to purchase and eat these ice cream bars. But, I also want your company to take out the extra sugar out of The Strawberry Helados Mexicanos too. Why? Because I believe you want to do right by your customers. Because I’m not just one voice. I taught my Food ingredients slideshow to 6th and 8th-grade classes at Gavilan Middle School how to read ingredients. They in turn taught all 450+ students on our campus how to read ingredients. These 450 students all went home to their families and taught them what to look for and what to look out for when spending our money on food in America.

I look forward to hearing back from you. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter from a long-time customer. Let’s change the world together and be proud of feeding humans food that allows them a healthy life. Let’s help corporate America become noble.

Sincerely,

To Whom it May Concern:

I have been buying Takis for over six years. I eat them almost like every other day. I have spent at least $5601.60 dollars towards your company's growth and profit. As a customer, I was shocked about the ingredients in your food. I am a customer and might not be one anymore if these products keep on hurting people and causing them to be unhealthy. I have introduced this product to my family and friends and now because of that, I could cause them to get an illness because of the harmful ingredients that this product contains.

When I scanned Takis using the Yuka app it scored a 0/100! I was very shocked to hear this news. I promoted your products to my friends and family. I've eaten them for so long that god knows what would happen if I didn't research these products. According to Bobby, the owner and operator of FlavCity, a company that investigates ingredients, states that your company products Takis are not approved. Here is why your product is not worth buying. First, some of the ingredients are red 40 lake and yellow six lake. Red 40 is a very dangerous supplement not only is it a risk to your health but it also can cause cancer, type one diabetes, and heart disease. If you took some of the bad ingredients out then I might consider buying your products.

My cousin had cancer and always had to go to chemo. He always suffered and had to be inside all day. Not only are the hospital bills so expensive but he missed half of his childhood and he will never get to relive his life just to be normal. Now he did get better but not everyone gets better from cancer. Now he has a kid and a wife. You wouldn’t want to have someone else get cancer because of your product, right?

Upon further research, I found that Siete food chips are more healthy and don’t have all the harmful chemicals that your company has. These products don’t have red 40 or yellow 40. The Seite chips also have a lot of good nutrients to help with your metabolism and don’t make people gain weight like your products do. Why should I keep buying your chips if they are bad for my health and can cause me diabetes, cancer, and heart disease? I really don’t want to have chemo just because you wouldn’t take a few ingredients away. If you did take these ingredients out I would still eat your product.

I look forward to hearing back from you. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter from a long-time customer. Let’s change the world together and be proud of feeding humans food that allows them a healthy life. Let's help corporate America become noble.

Sincerely,

To Whom it May Concern:

Me and my family have had Hormel Foods Spam in our pantry for three years now. I have three siblings, Both me and my siblings eat them every Sunday after church. I see that the average price for spam is $3.68 each can, My family has spent $574.00 towards your company. As a committed regular, I’d like to explain how your ingredients can be adjusted and improved. All from this, You will see the reasons why I worry about the ingredients that could be harmful for me and my family and why I disapprove of the idea that other customers should go through this too.

As I scanned Hormel Foods Spam using the Yuka app, the product scored 57/100. I find this very serious and hazardous. Although the app may not always be 100% accurate, I don’t see a reason why you wouldn't change any ingredients to make it better. As I read the ingredients during the time I researched your company, I caught my eye on some very serious ingredients that are considered dangerous towards my health. It is a highly processed food that contains preservatives like sodium nitrite, which is an alcohol that is linked to diabetes and heart disease. Seeing how many health effects this has, I was astounded seeing such a big brand having toxic chemicals inside.

My older cousin Isalei has diabetes. She is required to check her blood pressure as a routine in her daily life. She has been diagnosed with diabetes ever since she was 12. Now that she is 23, Isalei has learned to live with it although every time she eats a meal or snack she has to prioritize her. She also enjoys your product, But I will not allow your company to keep producing such products that increase chances of diabetes for other customers either. I need my family and I to be safe whenever we purchase your brand.

During the time I sent upon further research, I observed that tofu and ham are both healthy and safe alternatives to spam. According to

https://thekitchencommunity.org/healthy-substitutes-for-spam/https://thekitchencommunity.org/healthy-substitutes-for-spam/   I made sure it was an .org link to prove my evidence. This link states that Ham is healthy and improves your health and digestion, And tofu is healthy and vegan. All from this, I believe that you can improve your product and choose the right thing to help increase your score on Yuka. My family and I stay strong on the belief to eat healthy, And with your food being one of our favorite canned meats, We suggest you take action on getting better.

I’m depending on you to email me back with a list of things you’ve surpassed . I’m grateful for you taking the time to read this letter from a loyal customer. Please feel free to change your ingredients to make your food healthier and more trustworthy to eat.

Sincerely,

Leala F

To Whom It May Concern:

My family and I have purchased Maruchan for more than seven years, but my family has purchased this product for more than 20 years! Me and my family enjoy eating Maruchan at least twice a week. So we spent at least $1,900 towards your company's growth and profit. Also as a customer, I would like to tell you about how you should eliminate a few ingredients from the Maruchan to help me and more importantly all customer's health.

When I scanned Maruchan using the Yuca App it scored a 0/100!!! I was shocked to see this, because I had promoted your company Maruchan to my family and friends. I thought this Maruchan was a great way to eat healthy. As I researched further about this product I found some very hazardous to my health. According to, ANSES: French Agency for Food Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety, having too much Sodium can increase risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke, so we see that it's bad to eat too much sodium. But this is just one of the many ingredients that are bad for us. Also MSG can cause asthma and many other bad side effects.

For instance, I play soccer a lot, and eating Maruchan can make me not breath well so my performance in the field can be bad, but not only that but also eating I can have heart problems, kidneys, and eyes problems. So I wouldn’t like this to happen to anyone. I'm sure you wouldn’t want this for your customers.

To improve this product you guys could consider reducing the amount of sodium in the Maruchan and limit the amount of MSG on the Maruchan to reduce health problems for me and every customer. I don’t just say this. I taught my 7th grade class and some 6th graders to read ingredients and I taught other students about this product specifically and also taught my family about this.

I am looking forward to hearing from you guys, and I really appreciate your patience in reading this letter. Let’s change the world to make it better and healthier for everyone.

Sincerely,

Jose A
